Annual Conference 2024

15 – 16 OCTOBER 2024

Accountability in the age of transitions: Who gains and who loses?

South Africa and indeed the world, stands at a pivotal moment. Political shifts following the 2024 elections, accelerating energy transitions, intensifying climate pressures, and deepening economic inequality are reshaping the landscape in which mining, governance, and communities intersect. Yet transitions are never neutral. They redistribute power, opportunity, risk, and vulnerability. The central question we must confront is this: who benefits, and who bears the cost?

The Bench Marks Foundation convenes this conference at a time when accountability is both urgent and contested. Mining-affected communities continue to face the social, environmental, and economic consequences of extractive industries, even as companies and governments speak the language of sustainability, ESG compliance, and just transitions. The promise of transformation must be measured against lived realities on the ground.
